MY PHD PROJECT - Staffordshire’s Colonial Connections: re-imagining Black voices from the archival debris.

My Cultural Studies PhD project, in collaboration with Staffordshire Archive and Heritage Service (SAHS), explores records of black enslaved and free black women and men who lived in Staffordshire in the Georgian and Victorian periods.

Under the supervision of Professor Mariangela Palladino , award winning poet and lecturer Malika Booker, historian Dr Kristen Brill and Sarah English of Staffordshire Archive and Heritage Service, I’m investigating how we creatively and critically address the silences in archives.

I’m interested in how writers use fragments from archives in their work. I'm interested in the social, and cultural history of free and enslaved Black people in England between 1668 until 1894 and the history of working class people in Staffordshire.

MY ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

I read English Literature and Psychology at Keele University and was nominated Student of the Year. I hold a PGCE from Manchester Metropolitan University and a Master's in Creative Writing from Keele where I was the Postgraduate Equality and Diversity Officer.
